Scheduled or Instant Collections: One Platform for Both
Real-time collection is becoming standard across South African payments. The harder question is whether you can offer it without walking away from the compliant, scheduled infrastructure your revenue already depends on. Paysoft now runs both, scheduled and instant collections, inside one platform.

Across South African fintech, waiting for money has quietly stopped being acceptable. Payment platforms are racing to offer real-time collection options: instant request-to-pay features, real-time settlement rails, payment links sent by SMS or WhatsApp. If your business collects recurring revenue, your customers already expect this, even if they have never said the words “real-time payment request” out loud.
The harder question is not whether you can offer instant collection. It is whether you can do it without walking away from the compliant, scheduled infrastructure your revenue already depends on: your Debit Orders, your DebiCheck mandates, your Registered Mandates. Most tools that add instant collection sit next to that infrastructure as a separate bolt-on, with its own login and its own reconciliation. Paysoft built it into the same platform instead.
Two Jobs, One Platform
Not every collection should happen the same way, and treating them as if they should is where most collections processes fall apart.
EFT Debit Orders, DebiCheck and Registered Mandate exist because recurring revenue needs a standing mandate, not a repeated ask. EFT Debit Orders handle cost-effective, high-volume collections. DebiCheck adds bank-side authentication for regulated or high-trust environments. Registered Mandate sits in between, giving you a digitally lodged mandate without the repeated authentication step. All three are built for scheduled, repeat collection against a standing mandate the customer has already agreed to.
PayShap Request is built for the moments a standing mandate does not cover: a one-off settlement, a deposit, an arrears top-up, a payment you need today and cannot wait ten days for. Paysoft now runs both inside one platform, one API and one reconciliation view, instead of asking you to stitch together two separate systems yourself.
What PayShap Request actually is
PayShap Request is a messaging instruction, not a mandate. You send a request through the Paysoft API, the customer receives it in their own banking app, and if they approve it, the payment settles through PayShap in real time, immediately. If they decline it or let it expire, nothing moves and no money changes hands until the customer says yes.
That distinction is worth sitting with. A debit order, DebiCheck or Registered Mandate gives you standing permission to collect on a schedule. PayShap Request asks for permission every time, for a specific amount, for a specific reason. It behaves more like an invoice with a pay-now button built into the customer’s banking app than it does a debit order.
PayShap itself is South Africa’s real-time interbank payment rail, cleared through PayInc, the national payments utility in which the South African Reserve Bank holds a direct 50% stake. Once a PayShap Request is approved, settlement is immediate and, unlike a debit order, cannot be reversed or disputed after the fact. That is a strength for collections certainty, and it is exactly why the request has to be accurate before you send it.
Where Instant Collection earns its Place
The clearest use case is arrears recovery. A collection file goes to the bank, an item is rejected for insufficient funds, and the balance now sits waiting for the next tracking attempt while it quietly ages. Built into that same process, PayShap Request lets you send a request the moment the rejection comes back. If the customer agrees to settle, the payment is initiated immediately and reflects in your account in real time, instead of sitting in a queue for the next debit run.
It works just as well outside of recovery. A new customer who needs to pay a deposit before you deliver. A once-off invoice that does not justify setting up a recurring mandate. A customer relationship that has not reached the point of a standing authorisation yet. In all of these, PayShap Request gets you paid without forcing a mandate conversation you do not need yet.
The expiry window flexes to match how you collect. A request can be set to expire in as little as two minutes for something urgent, or left open for up to forty-five days for a customer who needs more time to act. Either way, nothing converts to a payment until the customer approves it, so you are not exposing your business to a mandate you cannot enforce.
What to confirm before it goes into your Process
PayShap Request instruction limits are set by the receiving bank, which makes it a fit for low to mid-value collections rather than large business-to-business settlements. Requests can only be actioned by customers at PayShap Request participating banks, and coverage is expanding but is not yet universal across every South African bank. Approval is final and irrevocable, so there is no representment cycle the way there is with a failed debit order, which means the request has to be right the first time. It also runs through API integration only, so getting it live is a short development cycle on your side, not a portal toggle.
Built to work together, not instead of each Other
Cash flow problems rarely have one cause, and they should not have one solution either. Debit Orders keep the bulk of your recurring revenue moving at the lowest cost. DebiCheck gives you authenticated certainty where dispute risk matters most. Registered Mandate sits in between. PayShap Request adds the one thing none of them can: getting a specific payment from a specific customer, right now, without a mandate.
Instant collection is becoming a baseline expectation across South African payments. What most businesses will still need, on top of that, is the compliant, scheduled infrastructure they already run on. Paysoft gives you both, in one platform, instead of asking you to choose.
